With a French bistro downstairs by a former chef of Michelin-starred Guy Savoy (Paris) and a seductive bar upstairs, Charlie is a fine place to linger until last call in Bali. The venue resembles an English townhouse with interiors reflecting the charms of its namesake—a suave, illusive James Bond-like character who is both restaurateur and nightclub don.
The single-minded strategic goal was to make Charlie famous by defining, cultivating and communicating the Charlie persona over multi-platform outlets including social media, print and OOH advertising. A new brand language and photography style was developed that also incorporated food and lifestyle elements.
Print advertising referenced pop culture material. Inspired by the iconic scene from When Harry Met Sally, the script-based concept promoted the food at Charlie as well as created a storyline that could be built upon in further communications both online and off.
The brand language for events at Charlie revolved around vintage black and white photography and event specific type. Red and black became their identifying mark.
Dinner events running over several weeks at Charlie married the art of dining with louche post-dinner antics one might only find at a friend's "mansion". Attention to detail, from lighting to props, talent and tablescapes, was paramount to the events' success.
Prohibition
Charlie's inaugural dinner event offered a weekly tour of Prohibition era antics starting in Chicago then moving to New York City, down to New Orleans and ending with a grand finale in Cuba. Guests were required to whisper a code word at the door and undergo peep-hole scrutiny in order to gain entrée. Cocktails disguised in teacups, a secret room epitomizing the ‘speakeasy’ where titillating burlesque dancers performed for a private audience and live jazz music epitomized each evening.
Patrons were encouraged to loosen their morals and immerse all their senses into the experience.
7 Deadly Sins: A Sinful Cabaret Series
Charlie's second weekly dinner series, The 7 Deadly Sins, provided an immersive multi-sensory experience embodying each vice. A special dinner and cocktail menu, decor, curated live acts and dj sets brought these evenings to life.
